Is This The End Of TikTok?

Discovering TikTok During the Pandemic

Saying goodbye is never easy. I discovered TikTok during the pandemic in 2020—a time when fear and uncertainty about COVID-19 dominated our lives. Remember how scared we were of a virus we didn’t understand? We kept six feet apart, rolled toilet paper and other essentials to one another, and hosted driveway gatherings because it wasn’t safe to get close.  People were losing their lives to COVID, and in the midst of it all, TikTok became a lifeline.

It gave us iconic dance challenges, like the unforgettable “Savage” remix by Megan Thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé, that kept us moving and smiling. It offered recipes from every corner of the globe, introduced us to countless small businesses, and created a sense of connection when we needed it most.

Now, the potential loss of TikTok feels like the end of an era, especially for creators who’ve built entire livelihoods on the platform. With its possible shutdown looming after January 19th, and discussions of a 90-day extension by the next administration, the future remains uncertain. Even if it returns, will the algorithm we’ve come to love—the one that helps us discover new people, sounds, and ideas—ever be the same?

Reflecting on Our Social Media Obsession

Perhaps this is a moment to pause, to reflect on how deeply social media has woven itself into our lives. If we’re honest, many of us—myself included—haven’t truly rested. We’ve stayed up late, endlessly scrolling, laughing at hilarious videos, or soaking up new knowledge. Maybe it’s time to step back, regroup, and reclaim our nights for much-needed sleep. Whether TikTok returns or not, its impact during a challenging time will always be remembered.

A Platform for Creators to Thrive

Despite the uncertainty, TikTok has left a lasting legacy, reminding us of the power of creativity and connection. It gave countless people an outlet to express themselves, find their communities, and even discover new talents they never knew they had. For some, it became a source of comfort, a platform to share stories, and a way to connect with the world from the safety of their homes. TikTok wasn’t just a social media app; it was a cultural phenomenon that brought joy, laughter, and hope during one of the most challenging times in history. Whatever the future holds, the memories and impact it created will be cherished.
